Biography
I am a science graduate with many years experience as a magazine editor and journalist. After holding senior positions on national and international technical magazines, I became a freelance journalist in 2002. I have experience in writing about a large range of topics including electronics, photonics, physics, chemistry, nanotechnology, material science, manufacturing, environmental science, medical physics and biotechnology.
I have a first-class degree in chemistry and have worked in the chemical industry as a research assistant. My first editorial role was on European Plastics News and Asian Plastics News where I was technology editor for both magazines. I then went on to be technology editor on the weekly newspaper Electronics Times (now Electronics Engineering Times) and later became editor of Optics and Laser Europe magazine and its website Optics.org. Since becoming freelance, my work has appeared in a number of technical magazines including New Scientist, Science and Nature Photonics.
I believe strongly in good communication and accurate reporting of science and technology. This motivated me to develop a media training course for scientists and engineers with the aim of improving their communication skills and enabling them to promote their work more effectively. This course has since been well received by several engineering firms and university departments including BAE Systems, PERA and the Optoelectronics Research Centre at Southampton University.
I am a visiting lecturer at the University of Exeter where I lectured on science communication to undergraduates in the biosciences department. I have also been a guest lecturer at the Physics Department of the University of Bristol.
I am currently a regular contributor to Environmental Research Web and Electro Optics magazine.
